Winchester, Massachusetts, in Middlesex county, is 2 miles NW of Medford, Massachusetts and 7 miles NW of Boston, Massachusetts. The town benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns with which it shares the Boston metropolitan area.
This area was originally settled in 1640. Initially it was known as Waterfield because of the presence of several ponds in the area. It was incorporated as a town and named Winchester in April of 1850. The name was chosen to honor Colonel William P. Winchester who donated a significant sum of money for the construction of Winchester’s town hall.
